Our Story

Who's ever heard of a yellow cardinal?

Our Name

The inspiration for the name “Camp Yellow Cardinal” came during a serendipitous moment while brainstorming ideas for our new glamping venture. We came across a bird-watching book that highlighted the elusive Yellow Cardinal, a beautiful bird native to South America. It turns out, on extraordinarily rare occasions, this distinct bird is spotted in the U.S. South, where it is considered a sign of good luck by excited birders.

Inspired by the bird’s rarity and the good fortune it represents, we decided to name our retreat “Camp Yellow Cardinal.” The name embodies our hope that every guest who visits the camp will experience the same sense of rare beauty and unexpected delight, creating unforgettable memories in a place that feels both magical and unique.

Meet The Owners

Kevin and Laura Wilson founded Camp Yellow Cardinal out of their shared passion for the great outdoors and a desire to create a unique, luxurious camping experience that everyone could enjoy. Kevin’s extensive background in community engagement and hospitality, combined with Laura’s creativity and love for hands-on projects, inspired them to craft a retreat that seamlessly blends comfort with nature. They envisioned a place where guests could escape the hustle of daily life and immerse themselves in the beauty of Central Virginia.

Driven by a commitment to excellence and a love for their local community, Kevin and Laura set out to design a glamping destination that caters to both seasoned adventurers and first-time campers. They carefully planned every aspect of Camp Yellow Cardinal, from the beautifully designed geodesic domes to the thoughtful amenities and activities that highlight the natural beauty of the area. Their goal was to create a welcoming, inclusive environment where guests could relax, explore, and make lasting memories, all while feeling at home in the great outdoors.
